How to get there

  • Aeropuerto Internacional de Chetumal (CTM) 4 km
  • Terminal de Autobuses ADO Chetumal 2 km

Approximate road distances. Check flights and bus schedules before you travel.

Bacalar is about 40 km away, roughly a half hour by car or by Tren Maya. Chetumal airport (CTM) is about 4 km from downtown, with flights from Mexico City. There are buses from Cancún, Tulum and Mérida.

How many days

One day for the museum and the malecón and half a day for Kohunlich.

When to go

From December to April there is less rain. June to November is hurricane season.

The seasons shown are the most usual ones; nature doesn't always follow the calendar.

Do you need a car?

Not for the city, which has taxis. For Kohunlich, a car or a taxi is helpful.

One day in Chetumal
  1. Morning
    Museum of Maya Culture

    Start with the Museum of Maya Culture, which presents the Maya world in three levels: the sky, the earth and the underworld.

  2. Afternoon
    Kohunlich

    In the afternoon, go to Kohunlich, about 65 km away, to see the stucco masks of the Temple of the Masks in the jungle.

  3. Late afternoon
    Malecón

    At sunset, walk along the malecón of the Bay of Chetumal and see the monument to mestizaje.

  4. Evening
    Dinner by the bay

    Dine near the malecón, with fish and Caribbean dishes influenced by Belize.
