Get to know Wyoming

Wyoming is located in the western United States, between the Rocky Mountains and the plains, and is the least populous state in the country. The capital is Cheyenne, in the southeast. Most of Yellowstone National Park lies in the northwest of the state.

Yellowstone, established in 1872 and a UNESCO World Heritage site, sits atop an active volcanic area and contains about half the world’s geysers, such as Old Faithful, as well as colorful hot springs like the Grand Prismatic, and the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone with waterfalls. Bison, elk, wolves and bears live in the park.

To the south, Grand Teton National Park has mountains that rise straight from the valley, lakes such as Jenny and Jackson, and the road that leads to Yellowstone. Jackson, in the Jackson Hole valley, features a town square with elk-antler arches and the Jackson Hole ski resort in Teton Village.

Outside the parks, Cody, near Yellowstone’s east entrance, has summer rodeos and the Buffalo Bill museum, and Cheyenne hosts the Cheyenne Frontier Days rodeo in July. On the plate, bison and game meats.

When to go

From June to September most roads in Yellowstone and Grand Teton are usually open; July and August are the busiest months. In May and October some roads and services may be closed. In winter, from December to March, Yellowstone has only one road open to cars, in the north, and the rest is visited by snow vehicles; Jackson Hole becomes a ski resort.

Getting there

Jackson Hole Airport (JAC) is inside Grand Teton Park, about 15 km from Jackson. Connections from Brazil are usually via another U.S. city. Confirm before booking. For the north side of Yellowstone, Bozeman (BZN), Montana and Cody (COD) airports also serve. From Jackson to Old Faithful is about 160 km, crossing Grand Teton.

Your questions

Frequently asked questions about Wyoming

How many days for Yellowstone?

Three days are usually enough for the geyser area, the Grand Prismatic, the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone and the Lamar Valley, where wildlife is most commonly seen. With Grand Teton, allow four or five days.

Where to stay to visit Yellowstone?

Inside the park there are few hotels and campsites, which fill up months in advance. Outside it, Jackson serves the south, West Yellowstone the west, and Gardiner the north, the latter two in Montana.

What distance to keep from animals in Yellowstone?

Park rules require at least 23 m from bison and elk and 91 m from bears and wolves. Stay on boardwalks in thermal areas and do not feed the animals.

When does Old Faithful erupt?

On average every one and a half hours, and the visitor center next to it publishes the day’s prediction. Each eruption lasts one to five minutes.
