Get to know Ohio
Ohio is in the Midwestern United States, between Lake Erie to the north and the Ohio River to the south, bordering Pennsylvania, Kentucky and Michigan. It is a state of industrial cities, farms and hills in the southeast, home of the Wright brothers, aviation pioneers, and astronaut Neil Armstrong.
Cleveland, on the shores of Lake Erie, has the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, a rock museum in a glass building by I. M. Pei, the Cleveland Museum of Art and the Playhouse Square theater district. Between Cleveland and Akron, Cuyahoga Valley National Park has waterfalls, trails and a scenic railroad. Canton is home to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
In Sandusky, on a peninsula of Lake Erie, Cedar Point is an amusement park known for its roller coasters, and the lake islands, like Put-in-Bay, attract boats in summer. In Dayton, the National Museum of the United States Air Force displays hundreds of aircraft and rockets in massive hangars.
Columbus, the capital, has German Village, a neighborhood of brick houses built by German immigrants, and the Short North arts district. Cincinnati, on the Ohio River, hosts the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center, about the network that helped enslaved people escape north, and the city’s chili, which is served over spaghetti.
In the southeast, the Hocking Hills feature caves and waterfalls amid sandstone cliffs, and in the east-central area Holmes County is home to one of the largest Amish communities in the country. In the south, the ceremonial earthworks built by the Hopewell peoples are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
When to go
Between May and October the weather usually favors travel; Cedar Point and the Lake Erie islands operate from late spring through fall, and summer, from June to August, has highs around 29 °C (about 84 °F). In October, the Hocking Hills and the Cuyahoga Valley change color. Winters are cold, with heavier snow near Lake Erie. Ohio is 2 hours behind Brasília (1 hour behind during daylight saving time).
Getting there
The airports in Cleveland (CLE), Columbus (CMH) and Cincinnati (CVG, on the Kentucky side) offer domestic flights.
