Get to know Nevada

Nevada is in the western United States, almost entirely in the desert and the ranges of the Great Basin. The capital is Carson City, in the north, near Reno and Lake Tahoe; the most visited city is Las Vegas, in the south, near the border with California and Arizona.

Las Vegas grew up around the casinos. The Strip, an avenue of about 7 km, gathers themed hotels with replicas of Paris, Venice and New York, circus and music shows, the Bellagio fountain and the Sphere, an arena shaped like a sphere covered in screens. In the old downtown, Fremont Street has a canopy of lights over the street.

About 40 km away, Boulder City sits next to the Hoover Dam, which forms Lake Mead on the Colorado River. Northeast of Las Vegas, the Valley of Fire has red sandstone rocks and petroglyphs, and to the west, Red Rock Canyon has a scenic drive and trails.

Las Vegas is also the base for Death Valley in California, where Furnace Creek is located, and for the parks of Arizona and Utah, such as the Grand Canyon, Zion and Bryce Canyon. In the north of the state, Reno and Lake Tahoe, on the border with California, have ski resorts in winter and lake beaches in summer.

When to go

From March to May and from September to November temperatures are usually pleasant in Las Vegas and the desert. From June to August heat often exceeds 40 °C, and trails should be done very early. Winter usually has mild days and cold nights, with snow in the northern ranges.

Getting there

Harry Reid International Airport (LAS) is about 8 km from the Strip. Flights from Brazil usually connect through another U.S. city. Confirm before purchasing. By car, Las Vegas is about 430 km from Los Angeles via I-15 and about 450 km from the Grand Canyon South Rim. The northern part of the state is served by Reno Airport (RNO).

To gamble and drink, 21 years old. Minors may pass through casinos when accompanied, but must not stop in gaming areas.

Can you go from Las Vegas to the Grand Canyon in one day?

At the West Rim, where the Skywalk glass walkway is located, it’s about two and a half hours by car, and a day trip is common. The South Rim, which is inside the national park and the most visited, is about four and a half hours away: ideally you should stay overnight there.

How many days to stay in Las Vegas?

Three days are usually enough for the Strip, one or two shows and a visit to Hoover Dam or the Valley of Fire. Those who use the city as a base for the parks need to add driving days.

Do you need a car in Las Vegas?

On the Strip, no: you can walk between hotels, and there is a monorail and buses along the avenue. For Hoover Dam, the Valley of Fire, Red Rock Canyon and the parks, a rental car is the most practical option.
