Get to know Nova Jersey

New Jersey lies between New York and Philadelphia, on the other side of the Hudson River opposite Manhattan. It is the most densely populated state in the country, but it has more than 200 km of Atlantic beaches, the Jersey Shore, and a large area of pine forest in the south, the Pine Barrens. Many Brazilians arrive in New York through Newark Airport, which is located in New Jersey.

On the Hudson shoreline, Liberty State Park in Jersey City offers views of Manhattan and ferries to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, and Hoboken, the birthplace of Frank Sinatra, has a waterfront promenade facing New York’s buildings. In West Orange, the Thomas Edison National Historical Park preserves the inventor’s laboratory. Princeton is the town of the university of the same name.

The Jersey Shore runs from Sandy Hook to Cape May. Atlantic City has the wooden oceanfront boardwalk, dating to 1870, and casinos; Asbury Park is linked to music and Bruce Springsteen; Ocean City and Wildwood are family beaches, with boardwalks and amusement piers. Cape May, at the southern tip, is a listed Victorian town with colorful houses, a lighthouse and birdwatching.

Inland, Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson is an amusement park with roller coasters and a safari, and the Delaware Water Gap, on the Pennsylvania border, is a valley of trails and river between mountains. On the plate, the pork roll sandwich with egg and cheese, New York–style pizza, and the tomatoes and blueberries from southern farms gave the state the nickname Garden State.

When to go

Summer, from late May to early September, is the Jersey Shore season, with highs around 29 °C (84 °F) and crowded beaches on weekends; at most beaches, sand access requires a paid pass during that time. In September the water is often warmer than in June, with fewer crowds. Spring and fall are good times for Cape May and the Hudson towns. New Jersey is 2 hours behind Brasília (1 hour during daylight saving time).

Getting there

Newark Airport (EWR) serves New York and New Jersey with international flights. Connections from Brazil may be direct or with a connection, depending on the season and airline. Confirm before purchasing. From New York’s Penn Station, NJ Transit trains go to Newark, Princeton and the northern shore, and the PATH links Manhattan to Hoboken and Jersey City. Atlantic City is about 2.5 hours by car from New York and about 1 hour from Philadelphia; Cape May is about 3 hours from New York.
