The state
Get to know Geórgia
Georgia is in the southeastern United States, between the Appalachian Mountains and the Atlantic. The capital and largest city is Atlanta. The state is known for peaches, peanuts and pecan nuts.
Atlanta has Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, the busiest airport in the world by passenger numbers and a connecting hub for the whole country. The city is home to the World of Coca-Cola, the Georgia Aquarium and the Center for Civil and Human Rights; in the Sweet Auburn neighborhood, the house where Martin Luther King Jr. was born and the Ebenezer church, where he preached, form a national historic park.
Savannah, founded in 1733 along the Savannah River, was laid out in blocks with squares, 22 of which still stand, shaded by oaks draped in Spanish moss. The historic center has mansions, churches, River Street along the riverfront, and Forsyth Park with its fountain.
In the southeastern part of the state, the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge, a large peat swamp with alligators and birds, is a UNESCO site. In the north, the Blue Ridge Mountains have waterfalls and towns like Helen, with an alpine style. On the table, peach pie, fried chicken and sweet iced tea.
When to go
From March to May and in October and November the weather is usually more pleasant, and in spring the azaleas bloom in Savannah's squares. In summer, the humid heat typically comes with quick afternoon storms. Winter is mild on the coast and cold in the northern mountains, and on the coast hurricanes are more common from August to October.
