Get to know Delaware

Delaware is the second-smallest state in the country and occupies the northern part of the Delmarva Peninsula, between Delaware Bay and Maryland. It was the first state to ratify the Constitution, on December 7, 1787, and for that reason is called The First State. It does not charge sales tax, which draws shoppers from neighboring states to its stores and outlets.

In the north, the Brandywine Valley, near Wilmington, brings together the du Pont family properties: the Hagley Museum, at the old gunpowder works on the river, Winterthur, a house-museum of American decorative arts with extensive gardens, and Nemours, a mansion with French-style gardens. Across the border in Pennsylvania is Longwood Gardens.

New Castle, on the banks of the Delaware River, has a colonial center with brick streets, the old courthouse and houses from the 17th and 18th centuries, part of the First State National Historical Park. Dover, the capital, has the Old State House and, at the air base, a museum of military transport aircraft.

In the south, the Atlantic coast features Rehoboth Beach with its wooden boardwalk, Dewey Beach and Lewes, the state’s oldest town, next to Cape Henlopen State Park with dunes and beaches. On the table, blue crab from the bay and scrapple, a pan-fried pork loaf served at breakfast. For Brazilians, Delaware is often a stopover between Philadelphia and Washington.

When to go

Summer, from June to August, is beach season, with highs near 30 °C and heavy weekend crowds. Spring (April to June) and autumn (September and October) are the best times for the Brandywine Valley gardens. Winter is cold, with occasional snow. Delaware is 2 hours behind Brasília (1 hour during daylight saving time).

Getting there

Delaware does not have an airport with regular service from major airlines; the nearest is Philadelphia (PHL), about 30 minutes from Wilmington. From Brazil, travel usually involves a connection to Philadelphia, or arrival via New York or Washington; check before booking. Amtrak trains stop in Wilmington on the New York–Washington line. Rehoboth Beach is about a 2-hour drive from Wilmington.

Your questions

Frequently asked questions about Delaware

Does Delaware not charge sales tax on purchases?

There is no state sales tax: the price on the tag is what you pay at the register. That is why stores and outlets in Rehoboth Beach and Wilmington draw shoppers from neighboring states. Lodging is subject to its own taxes.

What to see in the Brandywine Valley?

The du Pont properties: Hagley Museum, with the old gunpowder mill; Winterthur; and Nemours, with its house and gardens. Longwood Gardens in Pennsylvania is just a few miles away. Allow one or two days.

Which are Delaware's beaches?

Rehoboth Beach, with its boardwalk and busy beach-town atmosphere; Dewey Beach, known for nightlife; Lewes and Cape Henlopen State Park, which are quieter; and Bethany Beach further south. High season starts on Memorial Day at the end of May and ends on Labor Day in early September.

Can you visit Delaware from Philadelphia or Washington?

Yes. Wilmington is about a 30-minute drive or train ride from Philadelphia and about 1.5 hours by train from Washington. The southern beaches are roughly a 2.5-hour drive from Washington.
