About West End

The West End is Rottnest's westernmost point, connected to the rest of the island by a narrow strip of land called Narrow Neck. There is nothing between the coast there and Africa, only the Indian Ocean, and the wind and waves make the landscape wilder than the village side.

At Cape Vlamingh, the westernmost point, an elevated boardwalk leads to the top of the cliffs, protecting seabird nests. From there you can see stone arches, osprey nests and, from September to November, humpback whales passing. At Cathedral Rocks a platform allows viewing the sea lions lying on the rocks.

The Ngank Wen Bidi trail, about 8 km, skirts the West End between secluded beaches and lookouts. The cape is named for the Dutch navigator Willem de Vlamingh, who visited the island in 1696.

The sunset over the open ocean is one of the island's most beautiful.
