About The Basin
The Basin is a small bay on the north of Rottnest, about 1 km from the village of Thomson Bay. Limestone reefs form a natural ring that shelters the water from waves, creating a shallow, transparent pool of turquoise color with white sand.
It is one of the island's most sought-after beaches, good for families and for those learning to snorkel. Near the shore the water is shallow and calm; further out at the reef edges the depth increases and colorful fish and corals of various hues appear.
The beach has lawn areas, showers, public barbecues and toilets, but little shade. On summer days and weekends it gets quite crowded.
The island buses do not stop there: you reach it on foot or by bike from the village.
