About Fremantle Markets
Fremantle Market was built in 1897–1898 on the corner of South Terrace and Henderson Street in a brick and limestone building with stone-arched entrances. It operated as a wholesale market until the 1950s, remained closed for years and reopened as a public market in 1975.
The main hall houses stalls selling clothes, crafts, jewellery, souvenirs, books and second-hand items. The food pavilion brings together stalls selling fruit, vegetables, cheeses, sweets and cuisine from various countries, with communal tables to eat on site.
Musicians and street performers appear at the entrances, and the corner becomes a weekend meeting point. The market is at the start of South Terrace, the café-lined street with outdoor seating.
There is no entrance fee. The market usually operates Friday to Sunday and on public holidays that fall on a Monday.
