About The Cedars (Heysen The Cedars)

The Cedars is about 2 km from Hahndorf, on a property surrounded by eucalyptus trees and large cedars that give the place its name. It was bought in 1912 by painter Hans Heysen, one of Australia’s great landscapists, famous for depicting eucalypts and the light of the hills; he lived there with his family until his death in 1968.

The house retains original furniture and objects and displays works by Hans and his daughter Nora Heysen, the first woman to win the Archibald Prize for portraiture and the country’s first official war artist. Hans’s 1912 studio is as he left it, with brushes, sketches and canvases, and is considered the oldest preserved artist’s studio in Australia.

The artist’s garden, planted by the family, and a woodland trail show the landscapes that inspired the paintings. A newer gallery on the same property hosts exhibitions about the Heysen family, and there is a café.

There is an entry fee, with options for guided tours of the house and studios or only the gardens. Opening days vary; check the website before you go.
