About Hahndorf Main Street

Hahndorf was founded in 1839 by about 50 Lutheran families who left Prussia for religious reasons and arrived in South Australia on the ship Zebra. The name honours the ship’s captain, Dirk Hahn, who helped the settlers secure land in the hills.

The Main Street concentrates village life. Many houses are stone and timber‑framed, built by the early settlers, and the large trees planted along the street provide shade in summer and turn colour in autumn. Plaques tell the history of the older buildings.

Along the street are bakeries, butchers offering German‑style cold cuts, breweries, confectioneries, craft shops and art galleries. The Hahndorf Academy, an 1857 building that was once a school, now houses a gallery.

There is no entry fee to stroll the village. Weekends and public holidays are very busy.
