About Mount Lofty
Mount Lofty, at 710 metres, is the highest point of the range that encircles Adelaide to the east and lies about 15 km from the city centre. At the summit, beside the 1885 obelisk once used by navigators, the lookout provides views over the whole city, the beaches and St Vincent Gulf.
The summit is part of Cleland Conservation Park, with eucalyptus forest and walking trails. The best-known route, the Waterfall Gully to Mount Lofty Summit walk, climbs about 4 km from a waterfall in the suburb of Waterfall Gully and is a favourite local hike with a steep ascent.
At the top there is a café, information centre and parking. A few minutes away are the Mount Lofty Botanic Garden on the wetter slopes and Cleland Wildlife Park.
There is no charge to visit the lookout. At night the city lights can be seen all the way to the sea.

Practical information
Cidade Turismo reviews its information regularly, but something may have changed. Check with the place before planning your trip.
How much time to set aside
30 minutes to 1 hour at the lookout; 2–3 hours including the Waterfall Gully trail.
Best time
On clear days, early morning or late afternoon. In autumn the hills’ trees change colour.
How to get there
By car from Adelaide city centre in about 25 minutes via the South Eastern Freeway. There are buses to the Crafers area and tours that combine the lookout with Cleland.
Tip
Combine it with Cleland Wildlife Park, a few minutes away. Bring a jacket: it’s windy and colder at the summit than in the city.
