About Adelaide Botanic Garden

The Adelaide Botanic Garden opened in 1857 at the eastern end of North Terrace and covers about 51 hectares of avenues, lawns and lakes. It is part of the ring of parks that encircles the city’s planned centre.

The Palm House, a glass and iron conservatory brought from Germany and assembled in 1877, is the only one of its kind remaining in the world and houses dry‑collection plants from Madagascar. The national rose garden contains thousands of roses, and a dedicated glasshouse houses the giant water lily, the same plant found in Amazon rivers.

The garden has collections of Australian plants, a medicinal plants garden, lakes with waterbirds and the Museum of Economic Botany, with 19th‑century objects and samples.

There is no entry fee to the garden. Nearby are Adelaide Zoo and Rymill Park.
