About Art Gallery of South Australia
The Art Gallery of South Australia was founded in 1881 and occupies a columned building on North Terrace, Adelaide’s cultural boulevard, beside the state museum and the university. It is one of Australia’s most important art museums, with tens of thousands of works.
The Australian art collection ranges from colonial paintings to modern works, including landscapes by Hans Heysen, who lived in the Adelaide Hills, and other national figures. Aboriginal art is prominently featured, and the gallery organises Tarnanthi, a festival of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art.
There are also European art rooms with paintings and sculptures from several centuries, Asian art and decorative arts, as well as temporary exhibitions.
Admission to the permanent collection is free; some temporary exhibitions charge a fee. Next door, the South Australian Museum, also on North Terrace, has a large collection about Aboriginal peoples and the state’s natural history.
