About Adelaide Central Market
The Adelaide Central Market has been operating since 1869 between Grote Street and Gouger Street in the city centre, and is one of the largest covered fresh‑produce markets in the southern hemisphere. It started with producers selling straight from carts and today brings dozens of stalls under one roof.
The aisles mix fruits and vegetables from regional farms, cheeses and cold meats, fish from the gulf, breads, chocolates, spices and coffees. Many stalls are family‑run for generations, and the mix of Greek, Italian, German and Asian immigrants is reflected in what’s sold.
It’s a good place to try South Australian products, such as cheeses from the Adelaide Hills, olive oils and honey. Nearby are Adelaide’s Chinatown and Gouger Street, with restaurants of many cuisines.
There is no entry fee. The market is closed on Sundays and Mondays.
