About Centro de Espécies Ameaçadas de Hoedspruit
The Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre began in the 1990s as a cheetah breeding project on a farm south of town, and today also cares for other animals. It receives injured, orphaned or poisoned animals, treats them and, when possible, returns them to the wild.
The visit is done in an open vehicle, with a guide, and goes past the enclosures of the cheetahs, including the king cheetah, with its striped-spotted coat, as well as African wild dogs, vultures and other animals under rehabilitation. Beforehand, a video explains the centre's work.
One section of the centre cares for rhino calves whose mothers were killed, a programme not open to the public so the animals are not habituated to people.
For those travelling with children, the visit helps to understand the animals they will later look for in the Kruger.
