About Ruínas de Albasini
João Albasini was born in Portugal, the son of an Italian father, and arrived on the coast of Mozambique in the 1830s. He became a trader, hunter and leader of a community inland, and around 1845 set up a trading post near the Phabeni River, where he exchanged goods brought from the coast for ivory. Later he was appointed Portuguese consul and an official of the Boer republic of the Transvaal.
What remains of the post are the stone foundations of the house and warehouses, inside the Kruger, a few kilometres from the Phabeni gate. Panels tell the story of Albasini and the trade route between the plateau and Lourenço Marques, today’s Maputo, and a small museum displays objects found on site.
The ruins sit in an area where you can get out of the car, clearly signposted, and make a good stop at the start or end of a safari day.
