The city

What to expect from Joanesburgo.

Johannesburg is South Africa’s largest city and the capital of Gauteng, founded in 1886 with the Witwatersrand gold rush. For visitors it is the city of apartheid history and of Nelson Mandela: the Apartheid Museum, Mandela House and the Hector Pieterson memorial in Soweto, Constitution Hill and Liliesleaf farm. Northwest lies the Cradle of Humankind, with the Sterkfontein caves and the Maropeng visitor centre.
