About Parque Hluhluwe-iMfolozi
Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park brings together two reserves created in 1895, making it the oldest official wildlife reserve in Africa. Before that, the iMfolozi region had been hunting grounds for Zulu kings. Today it covers about 96,000 hectares of hills, river valleys and savanna.
At the beginning of the 20th century, the white rhinoceros was almost extinct, and the last animals lived there. In the 1950s and 1960s, the so-called Operation Rhino captured and moved animals from the park to reserves in Africa and other continents, and the species recovered. The park remains one of the places on the continent where it is easiest to see white and black rhinos.
The north, Hluhluwe, is more mountainous and green; the south, iMfolozi, more open and dry. Besides rhinos, it’s common to see elephants, buffalo, giraffes, zebras, nyalas and warthogs; lions, leopards and wild dogs are harder to spot. The park was the place where multi-day guided wilderness walking trails were born.
Rules are the same as other parks: stay in your vehicle outside designated areas and leave before the gates close.
