About Garden Route National Park - Wilderness
The Wilderness area of Garden Route National Park protects a system of lakes, estuaries and rivers between the ridge and the sea, with the Touw River at its core. The lakes Island Lake, Langvlei and Rondevlei are important for waterbirds, with dozens of species, including the kingfisher that gives name to the best-known trail.
The Kingfisher trail (Half-collared Kingfisher) follows the Touw River through the forest, with wooden boardwalks, to a small waterfall and dark-water pools. The color comes from tannins leached from the fynbos plants. Other trails, like Giant Kingfisher and Brown Hooded Kingfisher, explore the slopes and tributaries.
On the river you can rent canoes and kayaks at the park camp and paddle between forested slopes. Birdwatching hides are located on the lake shores.
The forest is southern coastal native forest, with yellowwoods, stinkwoods and tree ferns, and it’s common to hear the Knysna turaco, a green bird with red wings.
