About Tsitsikamma Big Tree
The Big Tree is an Outeniqua yellowwood, the tallest native tree of the southern coastal forests, with an estimated age of about 800 years. It stands over 36 metres tall and has a trunk of almost 9 metres in circumference. It is one of the most visited yellowwoods in the country.
The tree is located in a forested area of the Garden Route National Park, near the Paul Sauer Bridge where the N2 crosses the Storms River gorge. A wooden boardwalk leads from the car park to the base of the trunk in a few minutes.
From there short forest trails depart, such as the Ratel, featuring yellowwoods, stinkwoods, ferns and climbers. The timber of these trees was heavily exploited until the 20th century, and the remaining giants have been protected.
The visit is brief and is often done on the route between Storms River village and the river mouth, or on the road to Plettenberg Bay.
