About Storms River Mouth

The Storms River mouth lies in the Tsitsikamma area of the Garden Route National Park, established in 1964 as one of Africa's first marine parks. The name Tsitsikamma comes from the khoekhoe language and is translated as 'place of much water'. The park protects about 80 km of coastline, the forest that descends to the sea and a large marine area.

The Mouth Trail, about 1 km long, departs from the campsite along boardwalks and steps through the coastal forest to the suspension bridge, about 77 metres long, over the point where the river meets the sea. On the other side the trail climbs to a viewpoint overlooking the mouth and the coast.

Also starting from the campsite are the waterfall route, which follows the coastal rocks in the first kilometres of the Otter Trail, and short walks such as the Loerie and the Blue Duiker. Operators hire kayaks and float tubes to travel up the river gorge.

The river water is dark because of tannins from the fynbos. Sightings of Cape clawless otters, dolphins and, from July to November, whales are common.
