About Outeniqua Transport Museum

The Outeniqua Transport Museum is next to George station and houses one of South Africa’s largest collections of steam locomotives and railway equipment. The Garden Route was one of the last regions in the country to use steam trains regularly, and much of the collection dates from that era.

Inside the sheds are locomotives of various sizes, such as Garratt articulated engines, passenger coaches, dining cars with wood trim and a Royal Train coach that carried the British royal family around the country in 1947. The coach that served President Paul Kruger is also part of the collection.

There are also vintage cars, trucks, carriages and a large model railway. Panels tell the story of the line that linked George to Knysna, whose bridge over the Kaaimans River in Wilderness is one of the region’s best-known images.

It’s a visit that appeals to children and machine enthusiasts, and works well on a rainy day.
