About Sani Pass

The Sani Pass is the only road that crosses the Drakensberg from KwaZulu-Natal into Lesotho from the east. It began as a mule track and became a road in the 1950s. From the South African border post it climbs about 9 km in tight bends up the cliff face, from the valley at roughly 1,550 metres to the summit at about 2,876 metres, where the Lesotho post is located.

The ascent reveals the mountain interior: waterfalls, basalt cliffs, high-altitude grasslands and, in winter, ice on the rocks. Guides stop at viewpoints and tell the story of the pass and the region’s peoples.

At the top, the Lesotho plateau has Basotho villages with stone houses and shepherds of sheep and goats wrapped in blankets. There is a mountain hostel with a restaurant and views over the escarpment.

The road is only open to 4x4 vehicles, and conditions change with rain and snow. Tours from Underberg and Himeville are the most practical way to go up.
