About Zeitz MOCAA
The Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (Zeitz MOCAA) occupies the former grain silo at the harbour, a concrete building from the 1920s that was for decades the tallest in the city. British architect Thomas Heatherwick's project carved into the storage tubes and opened a central atrium shaped like an enlarged corn kernel, with light entering from above.
The collection is dedicated to contemporary art made in Africa and by the African diaspora: painting, sculpture, photography, video and installations, in exhibitions that change throughout the year. There are several floors of galleries around the atrium.
The faceted windows at the top, which look like glass bubbles, belong to a hotel installed atop the silo. From the ground floor, the atrium is the museum's most photographed spot.
The museum is in the Silo District, a few minutes' walk from the Nelson Mandela Gateway, and pairs well with a visit to Robben Island on the same day.
