About Lion's Head

Lion's Head is the pointed peak between Table Mountain and Signal Hill, about 669 meters high. The name comes from its shape: seen from the city center, it and Signal Hill resemble a lying lion. It is part of Table Mountain National Park.

The trail starts on Signal Hill Road, near Kloof Nek, and spirals around the peak so the view changes with each loop: the city center and the harbor, then Camps Bay and the Twelve Apostles, then Sea Point and the Atlantic. The ascent takes between 1 hour and 1.5 hours.

The final section has rocks, chains and metal stairs fixed to the rock. There is an alternative path that bypasses the chains. At the top, a small stone plateau looks out toward Table Mountain head-on and Robben Island.

The climb is very popular for sunrise and sunset, and on full-moon nights many people climb with flashlights.
