About Groot Constantia

Groot Constantia was founded in 1685 by Simon van der Stel, governor of the Dutch colony, in the Constantia valley behind Table Mountain. It is the oldest wine estate in the country. In the 18th century, Constantia’s sweet wine was drunk at courts across Europe and mentioned in the novels of the time.

The main house, with white walls and an ornate gable, is one of the best-known examples of Cape Dutch architecture. It operates as a museum, with furniture and objects from farm life, cared for by Iziko. The old cellar, with a carved gable from the late 18th century, houses a wine museum.

The property continues to produce wine, with vineyards climbing the mountain slope. There are tasting rooms and cellar tours.

Constantia is the wine route closest to the city, about 20 minutes from the centre, and can be combined with Kirstenbosch on the same day.
