About District Six Museum
District Six was a mixed, working-class neighbourhood at the foot of Devil's Peak, home to black, coloured, Malay, Indian and European immigrant families. In 1966 the apartheid government declared the area a whites-only zone and in the following years more than 60,000 residents were forcibly removed and relocated to the Cape Flats. Houses were demolished and much of the land lay empty for decades.
The museum occupies the former Methodist church on Buitenkant Street, one of the few surviving buildings. On the floor of the main hall is a large map of the neighbourhood where former residents have written the names of the streets and the houses where they lived. Street signs collected during the demolitions, photographs and personal testimonies complete the exhibition.
Many of the guides are former residents or their children and tell the story in the first person. The museum also follows the process of land restitution to families.
A visit helps to understand the city today and pairs well with Robben Island and the Castle, a few blocks away.
