About Stellenbosch Village Museum

The Stellenbosch Village Museum brings together four historic town houses in the centre, each restored and furnished to illustrate a period in the town’s history. The visit begins at the reception building, with an exhibition about the people of Stellenbosch, from the Khoikhoi to the settlers, and continues house to house through the gardens.

The Schreuderhuis, from 1709, is regarded as the country’s oldest documented town house: earthen floor, simple furniture and dried fish hanging from the roof, like a pioneer dwelling. The Blettermanhuis, with six gables, shows an affluent late‑18th‑century house. Grosvenor House, two storeys with a flat roof, represents the early 19th century, and the O. M. Bergh house, mid‑19th century, has wallpaper and Victorian furniture.

The gardens of each house have been replanted with species used at the time, from herbs to fruit trees.

The museum is a few blocks from the Moederkerk and Dorp Street, and is a good starting point for a walk through the historic centre.
