About Jonkershoek Nature Reserve

The Jonkershoek Nature Reserve covers the valley floor and slopes of the Jonkershoek valley, about 9 km from Stellenbosch town centre. The Jonkershoek mountains are part of the Boland range and reach over 1,400 metres. The reserve, together with neighbouring Assegaaibosch, is managed by CapeNature and is part of the Cape Floral Region World Heritage Site.

A roughly 10 km circular road runs along the valley floor, from which trails of varying difficulty depart. The Swartboskloof trail passes through a patch of native forest; others climb the fynbos‑covered slopes and up to the valley waterfalls, which tend to have more water in winter and spring.

The Eerste River, which flows through Stellenbosch, rises here. Animals in the reserve include baboons, klipspringers and fynbos birds such as the sugarbird; leopards inhabit the mountains but are rarely seen.

The area is also used for mountain biking, and the Assegaaibosch section offers short walks and a picnic area.
