About Sümela Manastırı

Sumela is an ancient Orthodox monastery built alongside a rocky cliff in the Altındere valley.

The complex combines built structures and settings associated with the rock, including a church and paintings that link the site to the Black Sea’s Christian tradition. Its position on the slope is central to the visit: the approach gradually reveals the relationship between the façade, the mountain and the valley forest.

The trip from the coast includes road travel and a walk, with stairs in the final section. Plan for the physical effort and allocate a dedicated time slot, avoiding adding a long transfer to another valley in the same interval. Access follows the opened sectors and the weather conditions in the mountain area.

Frequently asked questions about Sümela Manastırı

Does access to the Sumela Monastery end with a walk?

The approach from Trabzon includes road travel through the Maçka area and a final stretch on foot with stairs. Account for the effort of that approach in addition to the time inside the complex.

Was Sumela entirely hewn into the mountain?

The monastery combines rock-associated spaces with built sections attached to the slope wall. This relationship between façade, church, and the relief is one of the topics of the visit.

Can I visit Sumela quickly before continuing to Uzungöl?

The trip to the Altındere valley requires its own time. Adding another long transfer reduces the margin for driving, walking, and observing the monastic spaces.
