About Zilkale

Zilkale is a medieval fortification on a slope above the Fırtına valley, in Rize province.

The site's position allows you to observe the terrain that shaped the routes between the coast and the mountains. Walls and defensive spaces conform to the rock, while the forest makes up the valley scenery. It is a heritage and landscape visit, distinct from the inhabited area of the Ayder plateau.

Access by road requires choosing the correct branch from the Çamlıhemşin area. Allow time for walking around the site and adjust the visit for rain and visibility. Do not assume that going to Ayder automatically includes Zilkale: they are different movements within the same regional route.

Frequently asked questions about Zilkale

Is Zilkale located in the village of Ayder?

The castle is on another branch of the Fırtına valley. Those leaving Ayder need to arrange the connection through the Çamlıhemşin area before proceeding to the fortification's access.

What makes Zilkale's position important?

The structure fits the elevated rock above the valley, from where the routes between coast and mountains can be understood. Observe that relationship with the terrain beyond the stretches of wall.

Does the Zilkale visit continue on foot after the road?

There is walking within the site, which must be adapted to the ground and the rain. Allow time to cover the authorized sectors, without considering vehicle drop-off as the visit completed.
