A region to enjoy
at your own pace.

Istanbul is the gateway for many routes through Turkey and spans two continents. The Bosphorus separates European Thrace from Asian Anatolia, while the Golden Horn divides parts of the European shore. Planning visits by neighborhood matters more than packing many tickets into the same day.

Sultanahmet brings together Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, Topkapı and the Basilica Cistern. Elsewhere in the old center are the Grand Bazaar and Süleymaniye. Across the Golden Horn, Galata and İstiklal Caddesi form a walking axis that can take another day.

Water also shapes the experience: ferries link European and Asian neighborhoods, and Bosphorus tours show the palaces and hillsides. Büyükada, in the Princes’ Islands, deserves a separate day.

This destination brings together 2 cities: Istambul, Ilhas dos Príncipes (Büyükada).

Before you go

Practical information

A little planning leaves more time to enjoy the journey.

When to go

The seasons shown are the most usual ones; nature doesn't always follow the calendar.

How many days to stay

Four to six days, depending on interest in museums and the Asian shore. Reserve one of those days for the Princes’ Islands if you want to include them without cramming Sultanahmet.

Which city to stay in

Sultanahmet brings the monuments of the historic peninsula closer. Sirkeci facilitates tram, train and the pier. Karaköy and Galata provide access to Beyoğlu, with hills; Taksim expands transport options. On the Asian shore, Kadıköy and Üsküdar favor a neighborhood experience, but you must consider the crossings.

Respect the place

Take your trash with you, follow the signs and support local businesses. In natural areas, follow the visiting guidelines.

Frequently asked questions about Istanbul

What is the best base for visiting Istanbul’s monuments?

Sultanahmet and Sirkeci reduce transfers to the historic peninsula; Galata and Karaköy bring you closer to Beyoğlu.

When is it usually more pleasant to walk in Istanbul?

In spring, from April to June, and in early autumn, from September to October, temperatures tend to be milder.

Do the Princes’ Islands fit into a first trip?

With five or six days, it is possible to set aside a day for Büyükada without cutting into the main historic sites.
