About Museo Casa de Máximo Gómez
Máximo Gómez was born in Baní, Dominican Republic, and became one of the main military leaders in Cuba's wars of independence in the 19th century. In Monte Cristi he lived in a simple wooden house, which is now a museum, and it was there that on March 25, 1895, he and the Cuban writer José Martí signed the Manifesto of Montecristi, the document that launched the final war for the independence of the neighboring island.
The museum holds furniture, photographs, documents and objects from the time, with panels about the lives of Gómez and Martí and about the ties between Cuba and the Dominican Republic. The two left Monte Cristi bound for Cuba a few days after the signing.
The house is in the city center, near the central park, where the public clock brought from France in the late 19th century stands, and near wooden Victorian houses that recall the time when Monte Cristi was a wealthy port.
