About Isla Catalina

Isla Catalina lies just over 2 km off the coast, opposite La Romana, and is a protected natural monument. The island is low, covered with dry forest and surrounded by reefs. On the side facing the mainland, a white-sand beach with shallow, calm water receives the tour boats; on the other side, the shore is rocky and the sea becomes deeper.

What draws divers is the Wall, the coral cliff that drops in terraces from the platform edge to great depths, full of sponges, gorgonians and fish. For those who only snorkel, the Aquarium, a shallow reef near the beach, already shows abundant marine life.

Tours depart from the port of La Romana, from Casa de Campo and from Bayahibe, and usually combine beach time, snorkeling and lunch on the island. Because it is nearby, Isla Catalina can be done in half a day, and is a quieter alternative to Isla Saona.
