About Altos de Chavón
Altos de Chavón is a scenic village, yet built of real stone, constructed from 1976 within Casa de Campo on a cliff above the Chavón River. The project, by an Italian film set designer, recreated a 16th-century Mediterranean village, with stone streets, thick-walled houses, stairways, arches and lanterns. The result looks old and was handcrafted by local artisans.
At the center of the village stands the church of San Estanislao, with a plaza in front and views over the valley. There are craft studios, shops, galleries and a design school linked to a New York institution, which bring life to the place. The regional archaeological museum preserves Taíno pieces found in the area.
The open-air amphitheater, inspired by Greek and Roman theaters, seats thousands and hosts concerts. From the viewpoint, the view opens over the wide, green Chavón River, surrounded by forest, which flows down to the sea; the landscape has served as a film set.
