About Hoyo de Pelempito
Hoyo de Pelempito is a gigantic sinkhole on the southern slope of the Sierra de Bahoruco, about 10 km across and hundreds of meters deep, covered in forest and surrounded by mountains. It lies within Parque Nacional Sierra de Bahoruco, one of the island’s most species‑rich areas.
A visitor center with a viewpoint is located on the rim of the hole, over 1,400 meters above sea level. From there you can see the whole depression, with clouds passing below, and on clear days the sea in the distance. Short trails leave the center through pines, bromeliads and orchids, and the area is popular with birdwatchers, hosting endemic species.
The access road climbs the mountain from the coast, leaving the highway between Pedernales and Cabo Rojo and passing farms and forest. Temperature drops as you ascend, and it can be cold at the top.
