About Bahía de las Águilas

Bahía de las Águilas lies at the extreme southwest of the Dominican Republic, inside Parque Nacional Jaragua, the country’s largest protected area. It is about 8 km of white, fine sand, sea in shades of turquoise with impressive clarity, surrounded by low limestone cliffs and dry forest with cacti. There are no hotels, houses or facilities on the beach.

The most common way to reach it is by boat from La Cueva, a fishing village near Cabo Rojo: the crossing takes about 20 minutes along the coast, passing cliffs and caves, and the boatmen arrange the pickup time. There is also a dirt track through the park for 4x4 vehicles.

The water is calm and shallow near the shore, good for swimming and snorkeling. Iguanas, seabirds and, in some months, turtles that nest on the beach are part of the scene. In La Cueva, fishermen’s restaurants serve fish and lobster on the return.
