About Jardín Botánico Dr. Alfredo Barrera Marín
The Jardín Botánico Dr. Alfredo Barrera Marín is located on the roadside of highway 307, in the south of Puerto Morelos. It is one of the largest botanical gardens in Mexico, maintained by the research center El Colegio de la Frontera Sur (Ecosur), and protects an area of medium forest and mangrove of the Quintana Roo coast.
The trails pass through collections of orchids, bromeliads, palms and Maya medicinal plants, and native trees such as sapote, from which chicle was obtained. A reconstructed chicle harvesters' camp shows how the men who, in the 20th century, extracted sap from the trees in the jungle lived. There is also a traditional Maya house and the remains of a small pre-Hispanic structure.
Along the way it is common to see spider monkeys, coatis, iguanas and birds. An observation tower allows views over the treetops and the mangrove to the sea.
The visit is a good contrast to the beach and a way to understand the vegetation that covers the peninsula.
