About Zona Arqueológica de San Gervasio
San Gervasio is in central-north Cozumel, in low forest, about 15 km from San Miguel. It was the island's main Maya center and a sanctuary dedicated to Ixchel, the goddess of the moon, fertility and childbirth. According to accounts from the time of the conquest, women from across the peninsula crossed the sea by canoe to seek the goddess's protection.
The site consists of several groups of structures connected by white stone paths called sacbé. The structures are low, built of limestone, and include the Arco, the Casa Alta, the Manitas group with red painted handprints, and temples with column remains. The most intensive occupation was between 1000 and 1500 CE.
The visit is along flat trails in the shade of trees, with panels explaining each group. It is common to see iguanas, coatis and birds. There are no large pyramids like at Chichén Itzá or Cobá: the interest lies in the forest setting and the site's role in Maya religious history.
The visit is often combined with a drive around the island and a beach stop on the east coast.
