About Parque Punta Sur
Punta Sur Park occupies the southern tip of Cozumel, an area of mangroves, lagoons, dunes and open-sea beaches managed as an ecological reserve. The entrance is via the coastal road, about 30 km from San Miguel, and inside the park you drive on a dirt road with stops.
The Celarain lighthouse, atop a dune, has a small navigation museum and a staircase to the top, from where you can see the island's tip, the open sea and the Colombia lagoon. In the lagoon, wooden viewing platforms allow observation of crocodiles, herons, cormorants and other birds. Near the lighthouse is El Caracol, a small Mayan structure with openings that, according to studies, whistled with the wind and may have served as a storm warning.
The park's beaches have white sand and nearby reefs for snorkeling, when the sea conditions allow. Between May and September, sea turtles usually nest on these beaches, and some areas are closed to protect them.
The park charges a separate entrance fee and has a snack bar and restrooms near the beach.
