About Laguna Yal-Ku
The Yal-Ku lagoon is at the northern end of Akumal, at the end of the road that skirts the village. It is a narrow, elongated cove protected from the open sea where freshwater flowing through the peninsula’s underground rivers wells up and mixes with the saltwater.
The meeting of the two waters creates a layer that looks hazy, the halocline, which swimmers cross when they dive a few centimeters. The water is calm and shallow, without waves, which makes it a popular spot for beginner and family snorkeling, with parrotfish, sergeant majors, small barracudas and rays.
On the rocky shores there are bronze sculptures and shaded areas. The lagoon is managed as a public-use area and charges a separate entrance fee; to protect the water, only biodegradable sunscreen is allowed.
Visits are often combined with Akumal Bay on the same day.
