About Misión de Santa María de la Purísima Concepción del Agua de Landa
The Mission of Landa is in the village of Landa de Matamoros, about 20 km east of Jalpan. It was built between 1760 and 1768 and its façade is considered the most elaborate of the five missions.
The façade, in shades of ochre, red and yellow, features the image of the Immaculate Conception, Franciscan saints, mermaids, angels, columns with vine leaves and flowers, blending Christian and indigenous symbols.
The interior is simple, a single nave with the main altar and religious images. Around it, the atrium has procession chapels at the corners.
