About Peña de Bernal
The Peña de Bernal is a volcanic rock monolith that rises about 350 meters above the village of Bernal. It formed millions of years ago when magma cooled inside a volcano and the surrounding rocks were worn away by erosion. It is considered one of the largest monoliths in the world.
A trail starts in the village and climbs over steps and rocks to a point open to all visitors, with views of the valley and the surrounding villages. The ascent takes 40 minutes to an hour. Above that point, only technical climbing with a certified guide is allowed.
The peña and the surrounding traditions are part of the Places of Memory and Living Traditions of the Otomí-Chichimeca of Tolimán, intangible cultural heritage of UNESCO since 2009. During the May festival, pilgrims carry a large wooden cross up to the summit.
At the spring equinox in March, thousands of people come to the monolith, dressed in white, to what they consider a reception of energy.
