About Gran Pirámide de Cholula e Santuario de los Remedios

The Great Pyramid of Cholula, called Tlachihualtepetl in Nahuatl, the hand-made hill, was built in several stages between the 3rd century BCE and the 9th century. The base is about 450 meters per side, making it the largest pyramid in the world by volume. When the Spaniards arrived it was already covered with earth and vegetation.

In 1594 the Spaniards built the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Remedies on the top, later rebuilt after earthquakes. The ascent is via a stone path, and from the esplanade you can see Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl on clear days.

The archaeological zone next to the pyramid shows excavated parts with stairways, altars and the Courtyard of the Altars. Tunnels opened by archaeologists in the 20th century run through the interior, and a section can be visited when it is open. The site's museum has models and murals.

Climbing on the excavated structures is usually prohibited; the sanctuary path is the access to the top.
