About Convento de San Gabriel e Capilla Real
The Convent of San Gabriel Archangel was founded by the Franciscans in 1529 on the site of an ancient temple to the god Quetzalcóatl, and the church, with high fortress-like walls, was completed in 1552. It faces Cholula's zócalo.
In the same atrium is the Capilla Real, or Indians' chapel, built to hold large crowds. It has 49 domes supported by columns, in a plan that recalls the Mosque of Córdoba in Spain, and is one of the most impressive open chapels in Mexico.
The convent houses a Franciscan library with thousands of old books, open to visitors at certain times, and the cloister has 16th-century mural paintings.
The large, tree-filled atrium is a good place to see the pyramid and the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Remedies in the background.
