About Cerro de San Miguel
The Cerro de San Miguel rises just behind Atlixco’s center. A staircase and a path climb to the chapel of San Miguel Archangel at the top, from where you can see the whole town, the valley full of nurseries and, on clear days, Popocatépetl about 30 km away.
Halfway up is the old 16th-century Franciscan convent, with a church featuring a plateresque façade. On the slope there is also an open-air auditorium.
On the last Sunday of September, the hill hosts the Huey Atlixcáyotl, a festival of dances, music and food from the regions of Puebla, with groups from across the state.
From the top at sunset, the light on the volcano is the city’s most photographed scene.
