About Pirámide del Tepozteco
The Tepozteco pyramid sits atop the cliffs of the range, about 400 meters above the town of Tepoztlán. It was built between the 12th and 16th centuries and dedicated to Tepoztécatl, the pulque god, pulque being the fermented agave drink.
The temple is small, about 10 meters high, but its location on the cliff edge offers a wide view of the Tepoztlán valley and the surrounding hills.
The trail climbs through a ravine with vegetation and stone steps, roughly 2.5 km, and takes about one to one and a half hours. It is steep and tiring, and requires sturdy footwear. The trail can be closed at times for maintenance or by community decision; check beforehand.
In September, the Tepozteco festival brings the town together for traditional celebrations.
