About Ex Convento Dominico de la Natividad

The former Convent of La Natividad was built by the Dominicans between 1555 and 1580 in downtown Tepoztlán, and is part of the monasteries on the slopes of Popocatépetl, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1994. The church has a carved stone façade featuring the Virgin, angels and Dominican symbols.

The two‑story cloister preserves 16th‑century mural paintings with geometric, vegetal and religious motifs. The convent rooms house a museum about the history of Tepoztlán and the Dominicans, and from the windows you can see the cliffs of the range.

The large, tree‑filled atrium is still used for town festivals. At the church entrance, in September, the town builds a seed portal with designs that change each year.

Beside the convent is the market, with food and craft stalls, and the main street has ice‑cream shops and stores.
